An image format is the set of rules used to store a picture in a file. Converting rewrites the same picture under a different set of rules, which changes the file size, whether transparency survives, and which apps and websites will accept it.

Conversion is not free of consequences. Moving a photo from PNG to JPG usually shrinks the file dramatically, but discards transparency and some fine detail. Moving a JPG to PNG produces a larger file without restoring anything the JPG already lost, because the detail is gone from the source.

JPG is the right choice for photographs and anything destined for a form or attachment with a size limit. It has no transparency and it is lossy, so each re-save discards a little more detail. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it correct for logos, icons, screenshots and diagrams with flat colour and sharp text.

WebP handles both cases and is typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent PNG and around 25% smaller than a comparable JPG at similar visual quality. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software and a few upload forms still reject it, so keep a JPG or PNG copy when a file has to be accepted by a system you do not control.

Conversion uses the browser's own image decoders and canvas encoders. Files are read into memory, re-encoded locally, and offered back as a download. No image is sent to a server, which means nothing to breach, nothing retained, and no queue when the tool is busy. It also keeps working after the page has loaded even if you go offline.

Input support depends on your browser: every current browser reads JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP, and most now read AVIF. Output is limited to JPG, PNG and WebP, because those are the formats browsers can write. Animated GIFs convert to a single still frame. There is no file-size or file-count limit beyond your device's available memory, and converting to JPG places transparent areas on a white background, since JPG cannot store transparency.
